Technically Develop the SAP TSO Staff:

Beyond helping craft career paths for each SAP TSO team member, the PM will initiate individual training and vendor group training, leveraging senior SAP TSO team members as necessary to help oversee and mentor.

Mentoring Program:

The Project Manager and company manager should provide mentoring and coaching to all SAP TSO members at all levels, through a tiered approach. Thus, senior team members should actively take part in making themselves available to their team on a one-to-many basis. The mentoring program is designed to encourage communication, as well as help develop relationships within the team, presentation and writing skills, and generally to assist in “polishing” the team. Of course, the trick is to focus on the SAP project at hand while still meeting these mentoring and development goals.

The Project Manager & Management Team must Lead by Example:

• Demonstrate strong leadership skills.

• Demonstrate superior organizational skills.

• Build a strong supervisory relationship with the SAP TSO staff by providing counseling, coaching and sound operational direction.

• Be a team player assisting others whenever possible.

• Maintain a positive attitude.

• Complete all work, including team performance reviews, on a timely basis.

• Assist in maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.

• Strive for an optimal level of business and management skills.

• Always deal with individuals in a courteous/polite manner; Be prompt, patient and empathetic.

• Respond promptly to external and internal customer situations.

• Present a personal appearance that is neat and conservative.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Provide Growth Opportunities for Senior SAP TSO Staff:

• Senior staff should help the Project Manager work on designing and implementing programs and processes that serve to ensure the project’s success.

• The PM should allow the senior SAP TSO staff to take ownership of the tasks with which they are involved.

• The PM should encourage senior staff to present during meetings and other communications.

Focus on Professionalism:

The PROJECT MANAGER will note examples of professionalism, and lack of professionalism, and communicate this effectively and in a timely manner to the SAP TSO team member. Input may come from clients, peers, sales reps, and other sources both internal and external, but must be verified as true before any action is taken.

Develop Relationships with Stakeholders:

The Project Manager will work with all senior SAP TSO staff to develop effective partnerships with project stakeholders, technology partners, major vendors, and so on, to promote a successful project.

Timely Reviews:
The Project Manager will provide timely reviews. This is critical as many SAP projects bridge review periods due to the length of typical deployments/upgrades. I recommend a 3-month review process designed to ensure that new SAP TSO resources are ‘on-track’, and to help cement each member’s career development plan for the next year/until the next annual or semi-annual review.

However, I believe that the annual review is as much the responsibility of the individual SAP TSO member as it is his regular manager and the SAP Project Manager – it is this vehicle that spells out in detail the career development plan for each staff member.
